Relive the opening of the SciCast Awards 2010 event with this introductory clipsreel. It gathers together some of the best bits of the last two years, and sets the mood for the films to come.
The awards ceremony was held in the Faraday Theatre of the fabulous Royal Institution, on the afternoon of Friday 16th July 2010. Teams behind more than 50 nominated films made their way to central London, where they were joined by representatives of the Royal Society, the Science Council, The Royal Society of Chemistry, Children’s BBC, New Scientist, the Society of Biology, the Royal Institution, the Wellcome Trust, a range of universities including Imperial, UCL, Surrey, Bristol, and Edinburgh, and SciCast supporters EngineeringUK, the Institute of Physics, and NESTA.
Marty Jopson, best-known for his work presenting technology and engineering items for The One Show, hosted the glittering event.

I loved putting this clipsreel together, as it gave me an excuse to go back through all the previous SciCast films looking for favourite moments. If you’ve been following the project you’ll doubtless recognise many of the clips.
What’s lovely is that… these are all from contributed films. When I made the previous promotional clipsreel I had to use a bunch of stuff I’d shot myself, or from schools’ workshops I’d run. But that was three years ago, and a lot has happened in the last three years. 400 films, for starters.
Also delightful was putting clips in knowing that some of the film-makers would be in the audience for the ceremony. We had teams and schools who’d entered before returning for another crack at an elusive trophy, of course. However, there are also former nominees who’ve gone on to other things but remain involved, pestering us for tickets so they can come and support the latest nominees.
We’ve done something right for people to support the project year after year. Thanks, folks — that means a lot.
The bit I didn’t like about putting the clipsreel together is that I finished it at five o’clock in the morning. If you were at the ceremony and saw me completely mess up my own running order… well, this was why. Fun, though.
