Making Hydrogen from Hydrochloric Acid and Magnesium and using this Hydrogen to power a rocket.

Yes, you read that right: rocket. Rockets are always cool.

SciCast 2010 Awards - Category Winner

This film was nominated for the SciCast Awards 2010, and won the category:
Best Chemistry Film.

Chemistry! Yay!

We don’t get that many chemistry films for SciCast, which is a bit of a surprise, as there are plenty of excellent demonstrations. This film starts out deceptively simple, but there are several things to like about it:

  1. It’s very clear. Good clear shots, enough detail, nothing too rushed.
  2. It’s not one experiment, it’s two, with the second being a logical extension of the first.
  3. The rocket is a wonderful surprise, and while we don’t see it in a huge amount of detail, we don’t really need to — the camera operator jumping when it goes off tells us everything we need to know.

Great stuff.

Criticisms? Only one, really: hold the microphone a little further away, and talk normally. If you shout into microphones they can’t cope with the pressure you’re generating, and distort. Similarly, they sound ghastly if you blow into them. Oh, and we’ll forgive calling the acid ‘hydrogen’ — we know that you know what you mean!
