Explaining Fibre Optics

How can long distance phone calls be so cheap? Fibre Optics!

The team from Nower Hill High School write that their experiments require:

Basic school lab equipment:
  • bunsen burners
  • thin glass rods
  • power pack
  • plasticine
  • light ray box
  • 3 large Perspex blocks with white bottoms

This is a lovely film. The opening is suitably cheesy, and the parts in the lab are beautifully done — nicely lit, artfully shot, very clear. Great stuff.

Low points? Count how many SciCast films have a thumbs-up-and-cheesy-grin ending. A few less of those, next year, maybe?

Mind you, it’s done well, here. No half measures.

Great film.

I think this is an excellently put together film, the key points of the subject have been highlighted, and the voiceovers work perfectly.

Well Done!

I like this film, the demos are lovely and well explained, and the premise for the film is funny, but it misses an explanation of why fibre optics make the phonecalls cheap, which is what it claims to be investigating.
