Vinegar Rockets

Bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, and whoosh!

Reaction between vinegar and baking soda, in a film canister. The resulting carbon dioxide gas builds up inside the canister until the pressure forces the lid off and… rocket!

This sort of thing is extremely hard to film — you have small things moving quickly. They’re always going to be hard to see.

You get a better view of the ‘rockets’ in this very early SciCast film, but this film gives a better idea of how they work.

Well done. This experiment is a lot easier if you add one or two drops of water to your baking powder to make a paste. That way, it sticks to the lid of the canister and it wont react until you turn it upside down.
Another interesting twist is to add a drop of indicator and watch the colour change inside the can.

Have fun.
