Refraction

An entry from the Richmond School’s ‘Scientific Edge’ film competition 2007, which was based on SciCast. The team aimed for a charming vintage style, worked in some neat gags, and managed to secure permission to use a terrific piece of music that helps set the whole thing off.

Enjoy!

This is great! It’s genuinely hard to pull of an old-fashioned ‘silent film’ style, but this team have absolutely nailed it. The music helps (the composer graciously agreed to his work being released under the required Creative Commons licenses), but the camerawork and effects are even more important.

I’m particularly impressed by the caption slides, which are stylistically spot on, and the overall story of the film. It could have been plain ridiculous, but the visual gags play on the presentation style whilst making you think about the physics.

Terrific work!

What a fantastic achievement - this film has absolutely delivered on its objective but has been done with some real creative flair. This makes it very engaging, aiding the learning process for anyone focusing on this subject area. Well done.

I don't even know where to begin with how awesome this film is! Clearly a shoe-in to win!

Beautifully observed style - the attention to subtle detail is impressive. The acting, the props, the music, the suspense at the end where you think the lad is just going to stand over the fish more only to be wrapped up with a stellar gag. I genuinely laughed out loud.

Cracking job lads!

This is hilarious and pretty useful too.
