A simple and brilliant way of viewing rich soap bubble colours

Getting the camera in the right position to film this was tricky - we had to brace the tripod with stools and tape to stop it falling over, and be careful not to knock anything, since each bubble lasted for four or five minutes.
Worth the hassle, though - the results are beautiful!
This is a deceptively simple film. There are only three shots, but the team took exactly the right approach. They worked hard to get the crucial shot - of soap bubble colours draining down - even though doing so took most of the time available. The explanation at the beginning and the cute little ending were filmed in a flurry afterwards.
Great team-work, excellent patience and planning, and some beautiful shots of bubbles. Look for the experiment write-up, coming soon, for full hints and tips on doing this yourself - yes, the lampshade does help!

A really well made film guys well done.
An explanation would make it perfect either spoken, in text or even animated?

not bad...but more explanation should be given...i found it colorful but the concept or the project is not as colorful as it seems! perhaps and explanation of light refraction, spectrum of colors properties or something should have helped. Not satisfactory!

Hi Sham! Once you've put the lampshade over your bubble, you look straight down into it. So you can see the shade in the film as the white border around the bubble.
It helps diffuse the light arriving at the bubble, which improves the contrast - it makes the colours really stand out. Quite why it works, though, I'm not sure. Perhaps someone else can suggest a theory?

I don't quite understand the point of the lamp shade. It seems to disappear when they show the bubbles? What's going on?
