Associated Competitions

As well as the national SciCast Awards, we have growing community of associated competitions, events and workshops in the nations and regions of the UK:

Richmond Schools’ Scientific Edge

This event, now in its third year, was inspired by and is closely modelled on SciCast, with many of the Richmond schools’ entries going on to do particularly well in the national competition. The event is run by Andrew Hanson of the National Physical Laboratory in collaboration with Richmond Council. If your school is in Richmond Borough, contact us and we’ll put you in touch.

SciCast North-East

Run by Science City Newcastle as part of Newcastle Science Fest, 2010 will be the first full year of the North-East regional competition after a test run with a few schools in 2009. Keep an eye on the Newcastle Science Fest page for more information, or follow the SciCast Blog.

Ignite! SciCast East Midlands

Run by the Ignite! team as part of their programme of work inspiring creativity across the east midlands, this project kicks off in autumn 2009. Keep an eye on this site for further details.

SciCast Physics Cymru

The Institute of Physics are working to incorporate SciCast Physics into the Welsh National Eistedfodd. Check back later for more details, or keep an eye on the blog.

Science Oxford — SciCast Family Days

The Science Oxford visitor centre have been experimenting with video workshops, led by former SciCast nominee Jamie Condliffe. Check their website for details of future events, or to contact Science Oxford directly.

Glasgow Science Centre — video workshops

GSC have been involved in SciCast since the very early days, and they’re starting to offer their own science video workshops. Technically they’re not affiliated to SciCast… yet. Watch this space — better still, check the Glasgow Science Centre website for details of forthcoming events.

More?

If you’re keen to run a regional or local event, on whatever scale, please let us know and we’ll do what we can to support you. We’re not precious about people running their own SciCast-inspired events — in fact, we positively encourage it. If you want to brand your project as SciCast-affiliated, talk to us and we’ll supply you with logo artwork and all the rest.

We don’t have current plans to expand beyond the UK and Ireland, though there have been expressions of interest from the US, South-East Asia, and Greece, and discussions about such things are ongoing. Do drop us a line if you want open negotiations, or if you simply want to pick our brains!
