When you submit your film to SciCast, it’s automatically considered for nomination in all the categories for which it’s eligible. It works more like the Oscars than your GCSEs, which lets us change the categories around a bit to recognise as many terrific films as we can.
You can pretty much count on the following for the 2010 Awards:
- Best Biology Film
- Best Chemistry Film
- Institute of Physics’ Best SciCast Physics Film
- Best Earth Science & Environment Film
- ETB Best Engineering Film
- Future Morph Best Careers Film
- Flipside Most Entertaining Film
- Ignite Best Film From the East Midlands
- Gratnells Best Film from a Science Technician
For 2009 we split ‘Best Film’ into three categories, and we’re likely to do the same for 2010:
- EPSRC Best Film From an All-Adults Team
- Best Film — Primary
- Best Film — Secondary
We’ll also keep an eye on the number of submissions from different age groups, and whether this is the best way to recognise everyone’s efforts.
In previous years we’ve added an extra category or two to help celebrate and reward some exceptional films. So, in 2008 we had a ‘Best Unpublishable Film’ category, as there were some outstanding films we sadly couldn’t publish on the site for copyright or permissions reasons.
In 2009 we had a ‘Best Original Score’ category to reflect the terrific music accompanying some of the submissions.
We won’t know what extra categories there might be in 2010 until we see your films, so just send us your best work and we’ll do our best to recognise it!

All the film-making teams that are nominated in any category are invited to our ritzy ceremony, which is a prize in itself. Yes, that sounds rubbish, but it’s not, trust us. There’s a red carpet and everything.
Category-winning teams share Amazon Vouchers and a glittering trophy for their mantlepiece, and other goodies. You’ll just have to win to find out what they are.
